Pop Alu 32 makes successful maiden Voyage

Following previous updates, we are happy to see that the first Pop Alu 32 has performed very well on her maiden open water voyage, one that can be considered the most difficult passage to attempt along the Brazilian coast, from Rio Grande to a coastal town near Rio de Janeiro.

It is a tricky passage because there is no shelter between Rio Grande and Cabo de Santa Marta, in Santa Catarina state, a distance of around 320 NM, and if the wind turns to the usual direction for this time of the year, NE, before the cape is reached, most boats have to turn back and re-join Rio Grande in order to wait for another weather window.

In fact the wind indeed turned to NE before the boat reached the cape, and still they managed to get to safe port in Santa Catarina with a little help from the engine. They left Rio Grande with the usual condition of a cold front, providing fresh SW winds, but a little too late, and had to face the dreaded wind change.

And then they did another unexpected thing, due to time constraints from the crew, and left Santa Catarina to Rio de Janeiro state with NE winds, dead ahead. They beat into it and managed to arrive with no damage, and that goes a long way to attest quality of construction by Ilha Sul Construções Náuticas and the sea keeping capabilities of the boat.

Speeds in excess of 8 knots were achieved, and the owner praised the stability and sense of security imparted by the boat, even with considerable side swells.

We now hope to follow more of this boat´s exploits, and also await for news from the two other units which have hulls built and are in the final fit out stages.
